Profile in SENSUS
I’m delighted to have a profile in the latest issue of SENSUS, an independent arts journal focused on the Philadelphia region. I’m personally quite fond of this publication and tend to love the artists and writers within its pages. Thank you to author Laura Sallade (a great artist in her own right) for her thoughtful words on my practice. Here’s an excerpt:
“We are implicated in this specific moment, not least through the constant social media and news reminders of all its problems. Rather than looking away or trying to be above these problematic systems, Julia uses her practice to reckon with her place in the complexity. How do we thoughtfully engage in a broken system? When do we come to terms with the contradictions and when do we find the hack? The paradox of reality isn’t a rose-colored view, but it may offer a way through the mire—not always forward, sometimes backwards, twisting, falling, and veering off track. In our day-to-day, we exist in the system and often don’t perceive its motion. In all its wildness, Julia’s work actually offers a moment to stop and observe the perilous mechanisms of our world.”
